Where's my robot toys?

I am so torn on this, sure I want a robot toy, but when does it cease to be a toy? I can see it now, I come home to a general purpose robot that has done all the cleaning and possibly the cooking, but it will not stop there.  With every new model comes new features and abilities until one day at my doorstep arrives (enter clever robot name) 5000. The first commercial robot with an adaptable Ai system.

This is where it gets tricky, ethically speaking. Should we create robot rights just like animal rights? Don't get me wrong you don't want to treat your robot soo bad that it walks on you. Yet do i seriously have to apologize to it if I were to do something that affected it in a negative way?

This is just the tip of the iceberg when dealing with social and ethical issues involving Ai controlled robots.

The future is not human folks..

Where's my robot toys?

Emotiv demos Mind Controller

Emotiv is another company which is developing BMI (brain machine interface.) Their products are currently being designed for the video game industry. Take a look at this video of their product demo:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40L3SGmcPDQ

"While Emotiv is currently focusing on the electronic gaming industry, the applications for the Emotiv EPOC™ technology and interface span an amazing variety of potential industries -- interactive television, accessibility design, market research, medicine, even security. Plans for introducing Emotiv into these and other broad realms are already in the works." -Emotiv

Video games are child's play. This technology has huge potential to impede civil liberties. The developers of BMI know this, but they aren't about to let a big money project like this slip through their fingers. Emotiv lists off some industries which could potentially use BMI. I find it interesting that security makes the list. The use of brain scanning equipment to screen for potential terrorists has already been discussed in recent years:
Homeland Security To Covertly Scan Behavior

"Emotiv has created technologies that allow machines to take both conscious and non-conscious inputs directly from your mind." -Emotiv

We are talking about literal mind reading. The possibilities of where this will go in the future are disturbing. Our thoughts could be instantly publicized. Our very minds, the home to our individuality could become "public domain". This is the conception of the Hive Mind, and that seems to be where we are being lead with all of this.

Introducing Earth shattering technology in the guise of entertainment lowers suspicion. Entertainment is a powerful tool used to introduce ideas into the collective consciousness. By it's nature it is fun. We don't think to question it because it brings us joy. Hey, it's just a videogame.

This is far more than a game, it is our future. Now is the time to seriously think about where we are, and what is truly happening in our world. To brush off the potential malicious use of this technology is supremely naive.
