Transhumanist Soldiers

New Scientist posted a story on "The ultimate warrior"
(Image: Richard Mattox / US Army)

After viewing this picture I could not shake off this feeling that I've seen this before, and then it hit me.  The cloning of a super soldier is not a relatively new idea, science fiction has already toyed with this concept in the very popular futuristic movie ( Star wars )

Many times we have covered the transition of science fiction into science fact, so this is no different.  Technology has the ability to convert some of our dreams into reality while at the same time bringing to light some of our nightmares.

There exist a sleuth of ethical questions with all of this, so lets jump in and explore what may be a reality in the not so distant future.

The article speaks of empathy as a restraint that needs to me removed to enable a soldiers to shoot a fellow soldiers.  I was under the impression that the soldiers ultimate goal regardless of  whatever country there from is to ultimately protect people, with that said what happens when our soldiers transcend humanity? Would genetically engineered soldiers  still be qualified to protect and serve the will of "humans" ?

On the completely reverse end of the debate, would it be fair for people to be genetically discriminated from serving the arm forces? Should dormant inherted genes keep you from obtaining an officer position? Would genetically "modified" humans posses an unfair advantage over people that choose to remain human, thus slowly pushing humans out of the battle field and out of the chain of command.

All of this has a tendency of growing more and more complex as the desire to create better and better soldiers intensifies.  Over time recruiting soldiers that fit the necessary genetic preconditions may end up as an  inefficient  task compared to  simply cloning perfect soldiers.

To end I want to ask you this, what would a society that believes it is on the verge of a "Utopia" need with genetically engineered super soldiers?
