Nano Aerial Vehicles

Darpa is at it again, now with the creation of a humming bird nav bot (nano aerial vehicle). This is definitely going to have military applications, most likely reconnaissance missions for soldiers on the ground. Having hovering capabilities and the ability to be controlled from up to one kilometer away this is actually a really useful tool. One thing to note here is that, yes this was developed by a military contractor for Darpa, so sure it looks cute right now, buts that only because the nano guided laser weapon mount is still hush hush.

The Technological high: when drugs get hi-tech

Circutry man is a (B) rated post apocalyptic dystopian scenario where the surface of Earth is rendered unlivable, a scenario which forces everyone to seek out a new life underground. In this story virtual substitutes to happiness are offered in the form of sexbots and technological drugs. The main villain being called "plughead" which is is an unimaginative way to describe his ability to neurally interface with all sorts of plot props including people, is driven to commit all sorts of crimes in his quest to obtain hi-tech drugs.

While the movie itself isn't as compelling as what the story suggests, there are a couple of topics in it which I would like to dive further into. The concept of new informational drugs is something that Is explored in several films including this one. Let's not forget that chemically when you take drugs parts of your brain are experiencing unusual activity.  Who's to say that we cant induce such activities with electrical implants?  Hey, don't take my word for it check it out.

This has led me to believe that a properly wired brain can be induced to become addicted to certain behaviors like being good or bad simply by activating the pleasure zones in the brain. While I don't have the necessary neural chemistry knowledge to dive into this in greater detail, the possibilities here are rather staggering.  The first thing that comes to mind are computer controlled animal soldiers. Yes I know I always head down the military applications path first but someone needs to.

Now on the commercial side of things, if culturally and ethically accepted, we may end up with an industry of what I call petbots: biological robotic pets.  Why buy a regular "dumb" hamster when you can buy a hamster that is made of flesh and bone but controlled by your computer?  I know it sounds sick and rather cruel but we live in a world where science is outpacing our ethical conversations.
