Patrick Millard | Featured TransAlchemy Artist

Artist Bio:
Patrick Millard is an artist who originates from the small Western Michigan town of Lamont and now lives in Grand Rapids, Michigan. His work in photography, new media, and sound has resulted in a diversified portfolio that addresses ideas about media, digital culture, technology and the interactions that human beings have within their own synthetic environment. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and continues to gain recognition.
In 2008, Patrick began to show his work inside the virtual simulation world Second Life; exhibitions that advance beyond two-dimension work and expand his ideas of simulation, virtual reality, and the synthetic future where the physical object gives way to its virtual counterpart and its presence is valued entirely for its idea rather than its place in space.
------------------
It is my pleasure to have been invited by the TransAlchemy blogging staff to share with you some of my work that focuses on a variety of transhuman topics (i.e. Cyborgs, Cryonics, Nanotechnology and Virtual Reality among others).
My largest project, and what I would say is the umbrella for the rest of my work, is Formatting Gaia. This photographic series is broken up into three stages: 1) The synthesis of technology and the natural environment 2) The embodiment of those technologies and 3) The resulting advances and changes that are a result of that embodiment.
This set of images led me down a path of rigorous research into the many varieties Formatting Gaia manifests itself. My inspiration comes from the scientific and cultural happenings that continually make the science fictional ideas of the past a living reality of today. My reading of authors such as Ray Kurzweil, Simon Young, Ramez Naam, Andy Clark, David Levy, Joel Garreau, Norbert Wiener...the list goes on and on, has helped me develop a refined understanding of my artist concepts and allowed for me to deliver informed explanation of the work. It is reading that leads to my end product and plays an elemental role in my artistic process.
I am currently wrapping up projects like Formatting Gaia, Obstetric Repair, and Virtual Lens while also continuing on with more long term projects like my documentary project on Robots and Cryonics.
My newest undertakings include a set of images that illustrate the topic of ending aging which I am calling Rejuvenation and my version of travel photography; photographs taken while in iconic locations where the visitors are existing in a binary or digital body.
Embedded are a few selected images from the portfolio along with an artist statement.
Formatting Gaia

The cycle between human beings and the natural world has been transformed into a new formation that inspires intricate modes of transmitting and receiving information. Through the development of modern technologies human beings have begun to unfold the possibilities of telematic and cybernetic systems of communication. Earth is no longer a simple exchange of biological entities, but a more complex system that employs digital signal to mediate our existence within it.

Human beings, technology, and nature are now all part of a congruous system of existence that is becoming more and more visible in our landscape. Formatting Gaia depicts this world, where there is a physical connection between the three and all work in unison with one another.

These images explore an alternate version of the human existence than what we have known it to be in our short history. As opposed to being what we at times feel to be independent of nature and technology, the images show the necessity we have for them, as well as how we have used technology to steer our own genetic makeup. Photographic investigations into this world leave one with a visual depiction of the possibilities that we’ve already begun to travel toward along our evolutionary path.

TransAlchemy needs your help!

By: Aaron Franz

transalchemy.com

TransAlchemy needs your help! In an effort to create improved content we will be attending several live events. The goal is to shoot interviews, and collect quality footage that can be used in our productions. These events are costly to attend. Any small donation you could make would help us immensely as we are paying for this out of pocket.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NCkYJ7RLrU

My film: "The Age of Transitions" was put out for free in an effort to educate people. It took a lot of time and effort to create. If you appreciate this gesture, then please return the favor. Anyone who donates $10.00 or more to TransAlchemy.com will receive a copy of "The Age of Transitions" on DVD as a gift. The video is not for sale, and will remain that way. Please watch it, download it, and copy it all you want.

With your help our content will improve dramatically. Even if you donate a dollar you will be doing a lot. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated, because we understand how hard it is to simply make enough money to survive.

One upcoming event that we hope to attend is the Second Life Community Convention. Help us make it there so that we can all learn more about virtual worlds. We won't waste anyone's time by asking trite and predicable interview questions. You can count on TransAlchemy to be bold and original.

We appreciate your readership, and thank you for simply viewing our site. If you find yourself in a situation in which you simply cannot make a donation, then please tell a friend about TransAlchemy.com. That would help us greatly. We have already grown significantly, and it is because of people spreading the word.

The Ugly Truth is she's a Genetic Orphan

By: Carlos Mejia (Particleion)

Browsing the movies to be released on July 24, the same day Posgenderism will be released, I could not help but to take notice of something I have blogged about previously. Well a combination of things actually. Several posts ago I wrote an article that touched up on the newly created stem cell based artificial sperm.  I also suggested that the next logical step would be to create an artificial egg. Now, if you were to combine the two and bring it to term in an artificial womb, you would have the recipe for life soup, only this life would be synthetic from the start.  In every practical way it would be correct to call it artificial life.

The children that will emerge from this process, would be what I call "genetic orphans". Just when we thought it wasn't possible to bastardize our children any furhter, science has found a way. In this scenario the children would not have any form of biological parents, the closest thing to a parent they might have would be the lab in which they were created. What kind of a life would  this be for a child?  To learn that its orphan status extends beyond being abandoned.  The reality being it never had parents to begin with.

You would think that such a childhood would come bundled with all sorts of psychological drama.  Issues of self worth and the lack of being fully loved would become emotional hurdles in the child's life.  I want to remind you, that all those emotional states I just described will be reserved for "Human" children! Its very likely that these things would be anticipated as we march into a "brave new world." If our life soup reached its final stages, full scale genetic modification would also be a reality. Everything from physical experience to mental capacity would be genetically tweaked.

All of this could lead to the creation of a subservient class of humans or genetically modified super soldiers. There would be no need to mourn for our dead soldiers as they would all be genetic orphans, dispensable from birth! Should I even get into the dangers of creating a subservient underclass of quasi biological/technological humans? I guess we should.

Lets begin by theorizing that an elite class of humans exist, and there aphrodisiac is power. Well, right now the best dictatorships are held in check by weapons and mass media control. These will be crude methods of controlling populations in the light of the new scientific age. A scientific dictatorship would start at your genetic will to resist. You could be programmed to obey! All things deemed undesirable by human standards could become acceptable by rewiring your brain.  Society from a "dicktator's" point of view would be perfectly controlled from birth. The sheer act of protesting would be unheard of in such a society. Questioning authority would be cosidered a genetic defect.

So there you have it, the ugly truth of genetic orphans! Make sure to come back July 24 for a deeper video exploration...
