Technological Attainment of "World Peace"

By: Aaron Franz

First of all, we must realize that the concept of world peace is an extremely powerful meme. As an idea, it has great power because of it's universal appeal. Any good natured person is interested in the idea. Collectively we all strive to achieve such high ideals, because we all instinctively want to help each other. The problem with the world peace meme lies in its generalized definition. You can't really define world peace once and for all. An ambiguous goal that has the power to unify people on a massive scale runs the risk of being co-opted by a minority of ill-intentioned (although charismatic) leaders. This is a profound danger.

Now let's focus on science. There is a growing trend of blaming the problems of our collective human condition on genetics. Today, violence is not just being viewed as a social problem, but as an engineering problem. We are beginning to think that we can build a peaceful world by reengineering human biology itself. Transhumanists point to the fields neurology, genetics, and cybernetics as ways to intentionally alter human behavior. If we could simply find that specific gene in males that predisposes them to violence, then the problems of domestic abuse would be solved. Of course this is an oversimplification, but overall this is the line of thinking that is common among transhuman-fundamentalists. The human being is simply not good enough in its present state. The goal of a world state governed in peace is the ideal, but what means are being planned toward these ends?

The actual physical removal of aggression from the human body is being contemplated on scientific terms. If we are to be "peaceful" then there will no longer be a need for our animalistic aggression. Aggression itself is seen as a hindrance to sustaining a peaceful world. In his "Cosmist Manifesto" Ai developer Ben Goertzel explains that the human mind itself may be too vicious for its own good, "...if so, then the only solution to making a happy society -- to really obsoleting the social dilemmas -- is to modify the human mind/brain... solving the problems of society at the source." According to this world-view, we are the problem. More specifically, the human brain in its present form.

And then there is this quote from James Hughes and George Dvorsky's paper on postgenderism, "If the Left program of social reform is to succeed, Singer argues, we must employ the new genetic and neurological sciences to identify and modify the aspects of human nature that cause conflict and competition." This reference to Singer is of course put into the overall context of the paper, which is that the male and female genders in their present form are biologically opposed to real social "progress."

Here's the real problem: we are talking about changing the very foundation of what we are. Hypothetically, if we decided to remove a certain violent trait within a human being, then the consequences of that removal would extend far beyond that of simply making that person more peaceful. The truth is that our human instinct toward aggression is not solely a bad thing. It is all about the way in which that aggression is directed. If a man uses his natural aggressive instincts to protect his family from danger then that is a good thing. If instead he uses his aggression to beat up his wife, then that is a bad thing. To talk about removing such instincts altogether through the use of genetics, neuroscience, or cybernetic implants is profoundly dangerous. Male aggression itself is a survival mechanism, not a problem. Tempered with wise council from their female counterparts, any decent men won't allow their aggression to be misused. This is all part of the human experience, something tribal, which is of inconceivable importance. Instead of viewing our precious human life as a gift, we are slowly being convinced that it is a problem. A problem standing in the way of world peace itself. That is why technology is being offered as the solution. We are slowly being convinced that science can make us "better." Again, the problem lies in the ambiguity of the term: better. Who defines the parameters of "better," and why should we give this power of linguistic manipulation to anyone? Just what are we being sold here?

A pacified human being is highly susceptible to danger. To pretend as if danger will completely vanish from the face of the Earth with the creation of some sort of peaceful world society is obviously an incredibly dangerous and naive ideal to believe in. The idea that science can somehow save us from ourselves is also incredibly troubling. Ultimately, we all have the responsibility to do the right thing of our own free will. This basic freedom gets lost very quickly when we start pursuing transhuman projects of "improvement." World peace can be defined in an infinite number of ways. True power lies with the one who gets to set this definition in stone, and thus manifest an intangible idea within the material world. This is the attainment of the "philosopher's stone," the ability to bring thoughts into existence. Whose "great work" will ultimately be done in the name of world peace?

"Well, let's get started. The first question I want to put to you is, is it at all possible to build a thinking machine? For, after all, if the answer is no, then the whole project of artificial inteligence is totally worthless, and the history of AI is the history of a big mistake. Something like the history of alchemy. " :-O

Although the religious traditions and the rationalist and humanist traditions have generally been in conflict, there have been many Gnostic and alchemical schools of thought that attempted to use reason in the pursuit of transcendence. Adepts have sought personal health, longevity, altered states of consciousness and a variety of superpowers - levitation, astral projection or psychic powers – through spiritual disciplines. Religious traditions also promise a coming millennial paradise in which human existence will be incomparably superior. James Hughes

We call that alchemy, and we call the 500 year period the Dark Ages. Every alchemist discovered for himself that drinking mercury was a bad idea and not much technological progress occurred. One day, an alchemist got the bright idea of publishing his outcomes and sharing his knowledge. That begat the practice that we called the Enlightenment and the technological progress that has flowed from it. We are today creatures of that decision to publish instead of hording knowledge. The most important idea of alchemy is that everything is evolving. Everything will slowly become something more advanced given time. A child will grow up to become an adult. Stones will evolve into ore, which will evolve into metals or gems. Lead will evolve into gold given enough time. This evolution can be speeded up by the mage. This is the essential idea of the Great Work, the alchemists Ascension: that the mage, by his art, can encourage the evolution of everything into even higher forms.

The posthuman ressurection of man is seen symbolically as the  purification of the inner being within man. A process that can only come about with the junction of   sol and luna.  The junction of both male and female aspects of his inner being.

The "dark material fire" of the black sun divides spirit and soul from the putrefied body. "You should know that the head of art is the raven. If someone cuts off its head, it losses its blackness and will attract the wises colour of all.
D. Stocius von stolcenberg, viri-darium chymicum, franfurt, 1624

When soul and luna conjoin original man is purified by the fire of death. This same fire is used to fuse man into the new being that he is trying to emerge. Thus man is lifted from darkness into a new light. The age of "enlightenment" the golden age of trancendance of mind body and soul. What must be understood is that this is not something that is simply created, as nothing is created or destroyed it is more of a process of change. The alchemical transformation of man seeks not to "create" a posthuman but to mold and shape the current human throught the fires of enlightenment a slow  "Putre" (simmer)

We would do well to think a little less in terms of causing and building, and a little more in terms of shaping and flowing.Instead of causing and willing things, we should more often think of ourselves as flowing along with broader processes with which we are correlated.Instead of building things, we should more often think of ourselves as shaping and influencing ongoing processes     Ben Goertzel - Shaping and flowing Cosmist manifesto
