Long before the concept of virtual reality there was another perception altering technology, shamans knew that effecting the brain chemistry with hallucinogens leads to an alteration of perception. They learned over time that certain chemical intake would lead to a person being able to temporally transcend objective and in extreme cases even subjective reality. This experimentation of the mind with altered states of consciousness quickly became the hidden love child of modern psychology. Deep inside the brain there laid many unknowns concerning human perception, dormant till the consumption of psychoactive drugs.
Now with the promise of upcoming advancements in complete wetware hacking, the ability to go into the brain and induce an array of desired altered states will surely increase. The only difference between current consciousness altering drugs and their future counterparts lies in the potential of highly targeted effects. One who wishes to alter reality via the consumption of lsd or other such drugs do so with very little control of the possible outcomes. This huge array of possible outcomes is a primary reason that they are legally banned. Yet all of this can change if we could possibly hone the effected areas of the brain. This ability will come with greater understanding of the brain's bio-chemistry. In other words designer drugs that only effect color perception and nothing else could be created.
Imagine drugs to induce instant orgasm, taste, sound or any other desired emotional state. Highly targeted bio-chemical influencing drugs could be deemed safer for mass consumption than the entertainment drugs of today. In such a scenario reality now becomes bio-programmable and a new futuristic hippy movement emerges.
