If Transhumanism Has Won, Who Lost?

This is a direct response to a blog post titled:

While most transhumanists completely ignore Transalchemy, and while I could care less if any self-titled transhumanists read this blog, I constantly watch, read, and review as much of their work as possible. So with this said, up until now I have hardly bothered firing direct blog posts at any of the transhumanist chatter that I encounter on the web.

Tonight while on my late night "transhumanism" research mission, scouring the social web, I discovered a post by Michael titled "Transhumanism Has Already Won." Now, as a fellow blogger I hold much respect for Michael and understand the need to "promote" - not just from passion, but as a scripted job function, being a staff member of SIAI. So unlike the silly little flame wars that follow me around the net, I refuse that my response, below, will become any such mess. I share legitimate concerns in this post... Lets begin, shall we?

First off this post highlights an elitism that I have noticed some transhumanists hold regarding the future of the "human" species.

"At some point during the next century, the most powerful being will be a transhuman."

Please define powerful. Does this assume that humanity is broken and upgrading it will automatically yield a superior being? If you wish to make such a bold claim, could you please define what you mean by this? If you meant to put it in the context of contemporary "geopolitical power", then again, this is nothing short of hopeful speculation and hopeful rationale.

How do you feel about the possibility that the entire human race might willingly allow itself to be controlled by a race of augmented beings?
Well, it doesn't seem entirely realistic to me.

We can play the speculation game to envision a world where human and transhuman governments may co-exist - each serving their own people.

Yet subtle tones of elitism are the least of my concerns. What seems more dangerous are a consistent pattern of statements from transhumanists attempting to sell me a vision of "how the ecology of new beings will be superior to humans in every way".

The real problem I have with Michael's article is actually the gross simplification of theological beliefs in an attempt to convince you that religious groups already embrace transhumanism in their belief systems.

"At their base, the world’s major two largest religions — Christianity and Islam — are transhumanistic. After all, they promise transcension from death and the concerns of the flesh, and being upgraded to that archetypical transhuman — the Angel."

Like most transhumanists I have met, Michael is an atheist - an assertion I make that is grounded in his very own content (view posts). While the strong point of his argument is predicated on the need to stay materialistically bounded to this universe - due to a lack of faith in God, he somewhat misses the "point" of transcension.

Without a faith in God,
one is not in a position to know about the actual essense of faith.

We must accept the possibility that there is a probability, greater than 0%, that "God exists". Therefore if an actual greater reality exists that superceeds this universe, then no transhuman could ever be the most powerful being on this planet one day. There is not even convincing evidence that modern humans are even the most powerful beings on this planet today (the biosphere, extraterrestrials, gaia, the sun, etc...).

Much of transhumanism relies on the development of a material-based higher intellect (Ai). In either case there is much assumption that all will be well - up to and through the singularity - due to our eventual evolution and exposure to superior minds than the mere human.

In either case, I caution against completely ignoring, or more precisely, failing to comprehend that which radiates from the core of religion is:
the possibility that a greater intelligence already supercedes this universe.

If you wish to truly compare religion to transhumanism, you will probably find the process of personal transcension and the transhuman trancension of humanity are of very different natures.  A transhuman being merges its consciousness with synthethically created super-intelligence that is more-or-less trapped within the boundaries of the universe in which it originated.  Similar to transhumanism, religion shares the same understanding of how beings merge with a greater conciousness.  But unlike transhumanism, this consciousness is not created by man - but rather, it is the consciousness directly responsible for the existence of this very universe. Freeing man not just from flesh as you stated but all material existence that is the universe.

If we solely persued this matter in this manner in which I present it, then we can see that the transhuman future conflicts with the true desire of religions. As transhuman-centric technologies will aim to keep you trapped within the comfortable boundaries of this universe, religions would seek to return to the creator of the universe.

For these reasons, I consider the singularity as a theoretical religion.  But to make it fair, I will take God out of the equation, in order to argue that

God is Automatic Intelligence (Ai) and the Universe is Simulation

Transhumanism seeks to merge with the Ai being created inside the universe.
Religions seek to merge with the Ai that created the universe.
Which Ai do you prefer?

Stop double thinking. Face reality, and we will all be better off. Thank you very much.

In regard to the dynamic human spirit, consider this...

Emotion/ love/ passion is being slowly murdered. It is truly hated by the control-freak psychos who run this show (they only hold power over us, because we allow them to). The transhuman project is very concerned with this.

transhumanists want:
- to control their emotions with technologies, (this includes pharma, which is already being used on a mass scale)
- to remove the male/ female relationship altogether in favor of genetic engineering.
- ectogenesis = growing babies in artificial wombs. the tech has been in the works for decades (at least) and they are now starting to openly discuss this.
- marriage/ relationships themselves are already mere social contracts, but this will be taken even further. new sorts of contracts will emerge, but they will all be cold and calculated legality.
- no spontaneity. our "patterns" are to be completely monitored and understood with Ai technology.
- ultimately, the dynamic human spirit is to be replaced by "logic and reason," this is the epitome of the "enlightened" system. intelligence over emotion. MIND OVER MATTER

The Alchemical Ages and the Coming "Golden" Age

The birth of an Alchemical dream

Some view alchemy as just a precursor to the rise of the modern experimental logic based sciences, and while this is partly true a lot is lost when you let your self believe this. Another belief is that alchemy "died" or went underground once disciplines like chemistry became more acceptable approaches to experimenting with matter. Yet, while this may be true, much was lost when attempting to intellectualize a practice that is deeply rooted in spiritual/ non materialistic desires. So while the rest of the scientific community spun off in search of the inner secrets of the universe via materialism, religion was left to deal with the spiritual needs of man. Needs that have grown to cosmic proportions as we attempt to "transform" ourselves into "gods". So, while much was hidden, and time progressed, the root of all scientific discovery continued pushing upon the original desires of alchemist. The alchemist wanted to seek out and understand the material universe down to it's core in hopes of achieving a method to complete the union of spirit and matter. This inner yearning, to connect one's material self with the divine spirit of "God." was more than a philosophical approach by the ancient alchemist. It was a science that needed to be broken down and explored individually in order to reach the true goal. A goal so lofty that it'scompletion would not come through the works of a single being but rather the collected knowledge, study, and research of the entire planet for several ages to complete. A goal that was philosophical in nature. A goal that needed to be stripped away from the logical pursuit's of men. This, of course, is the complete transmutation of the soul into a divine being. Some may call it union with God, while others may see it as the liberation of the self from the human sphere of existence.

The Scientific Alchemical veil
While The alchemist sought to shed the mortal self to reach a state of divine enlightenment, there were many who did not align with such spiritual desires. However, this does not mean that they weren't interested in joining the quest to understand the universe. Over time, as more recruits of the occult sciences where killed for their alchemical beliefs, it was necessary that alchemy be stripped and compartmentalized from it's core philosophy. A crowning achievement for alchemy came as the new sciences* quickly became the accepted way to question the fabric of reality. This was done behind the veil of scientific experimentation.

The Alchemical Renaissance
It serves as no surprise to me that once the scientific veil was created, and many of the deeply held desires to explore the inner and outer universe hidden, the world experienced a revolution, a "scientific revolution". Every field of study, from astronomy to physics, gained a significant boost once the quest for knowledge was taken off its hinges. So it can be understood that the renaissance was able to occur once the deeply beloved pursuits of men escaped the esoteric world. After this monumental event occurred, all became history, literally.

This History, while currently in the making, should be fully understood as the grand holistic process that is. Long before alchemy was formally conceptualized, man had been going through very significant cultural and material evolutionary, or alchemical periods. Through the exploration of the physical elements man began to master the world around him. This was a necessary step for a being that wished to reach out into the cosmos . The so called Stone, Iron, and Bronze ages are symbolic of the technological progress that has happened over an extended period of time. These various metals are transmuting the world, to bring the eventual dawning of the "Golden age".

The Golden dream
With a dream to expand the combined sphere of consciousness on this planet, each and every alchemist, scientist, philosopher, astronomer, chemist, and biologist consciously or unconsciously contribute to the completion of "The Great work". The point of history is that the alchemist achieves "Illumination" for the entire planet. This macrocosmic process is now being driven by the rapid growth of technology. There is a unique turn of events as we approach the cosmic dawn. The original teachings and desires of the ancient alchemists are long forgotten by what an army of scientists. They are all working their lives away without understanding the effects that their work will have on the transformation of this planet. The few that are aware refer to the upcoming alchemical golden age as a technological utopia. This coming "utopia," dubbed the Singularity, is supposed to represent the point in history where we master the elements and create supercomputers that will tell us everything we need to know about the universe. The Singularity does not just represent a point in the future, but rather thousands of years of refining the ores of this planet. This is so we can build artificial intelligences that will unlock all of the unknown secrets of the universe, a goal fitting of any modern alchemist. So, now as we find ourselves ever closer to understanding the prima materia, the very essence of matter, we have forgotten why this knowledge is being sought in the first place. We have forgotten that all the materialism of science serves the sole reason of expanding "the spirit" into the unknown...

Techno-Wizardry

Techno-Wizardry: In the coming years a very strange class of people will be able to exist,  a class that may have once existed but not no longer, or a class that is about to exist for the first time. This  class up to now has not been able to exist, due to constrains on  "magick" (Technology)~

Wizardry a craft transformed by technology.
Wizardry as any system of magick attempts to link a person's will to the physical universe by some type of  mystical practice. A practitioner may choose to effect a current state in his or her life through all kinds of methods that range from incantations to the creation of talismans. With the introduction of brain to machine interfaces in combination with an infused artificial intelligence, a person's will could be greatly increased into "superhuman" influence, enabling acts of great wonder near to or greater than biblical magnitude.

Pre-Singulairty-Technology Tools
As the development of alchemy transcends into a high-tech electronic world, so will those that use it as a tool to obtain greater control of the human world, they will attempt to do this through the act of elevating consciousness by technological means.  Yet as the gap between thought and physical interaction (effect) on the world are shortened we must ask if technology is truly  "liberating" humanity from physical burden.

  • Ai-Enhanced intelligence
  • Full control of matter (molecular manufacturing)

Techno-Wizardry ~ Magick
Before we begin it is very important that you integrate that technology is an enabler for magick, the manifestation of a person's will with out direct contact with system or event in which you wish to change or influence. Over time this very real desire to manipulate the physical world will get explored by

To reach the maximized ability to influence the physical environment a technological wizard would live in near synthetic world, where at the core of all the matter around the practitioner is composed of artificial intelligence enabled nano-bots.  Along with "intelligent" matter the practitioner would need an "intelligent" brain. Full Ai human mind integration will enable a level of thought manipulation on matter with a skill and elegance unlike anything ever seen.

Magick-Scalability

Sphere of influence over time could reach cosmic levels, wizards able to control all the matter and energy at galactic and even potentially universal scales could one day exist.

If such a power is obtainable some may seek it for personal power and for the us to gain control over others, which leads us to potential dangerous with such a class.

Danger
As the ability to influence matter and energy increase a techno-wizard could become unable to retain human alignment with it's desires. The Ai mind element unlike biology will quickly turn such a being into an alien mind inside a human body.

This is not real - therefore not important.
Regardless where your belief system lay, technology will enable any fantastical fictional idea to come into reality. What the singularity will ultimately bring lies right beyond the realm of our "human" understanding.
