The Magical Apple of Technological knowledge

"Our most advanced technology in a magical and revolutionary device"

The technological wizards are at it again, as the ongoing indistinguishability between technology and magic makes itself apparent in product debuts. This synergistic act is not new or unique to this one technology company, one which carries the name and symbol of an "apple". This apple symbolizes the knowledge obtained from the forbidden fruit. This is the knowledge that has been used to create these magical devices. Its symbol is a synchromystic temporal relic, although it is important to understand that new innovations are the collective knowledge of designers, technologies, programmers, and other skilled artists. The work of all these people is being used to drive the company forward so that it continually bares fruit. Although, these new fruits fall short of being miraculous, and end up being nothing more than products that enable more people to have access to the internet. Philosophically I also find it interesting that once you bite (purchase) this new "magical" device, you instantly have access to massive amounts of knowledge (the internet).

"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."

As we explore this meme we find that this is an ongoing theme for Apple, the use of the word "magic" when describing their latest creations. If you go back to the introduction of the iphone it was also described as magic, and since then the iphone has become a magical success. Let us not forget the power of words, and how the continuous use of specific words can serve to trigger a sense of wonder in the populous. We all have a sense of wonder and lure when it comes to being shown something that defies our ability to understand it. This is the lure associated with stage magicians, a profession that while instantly is taken as illusion, has a very profound psychological effect on people. All of us at some point in time have seen a magic trick, and have wondered how it works. We seek to understand the lure that comes with the trick. In a very similar fashion technology companies are employing similar techniques when they introduce new gizmos.

Although the drive to bring wonder and lure to the product to increase sales is one motivational factor, there is also a deeper implication at the root of this paradigm shift. The key shift surrounding technology and works of magic lies in it's history. When knowledge began to give rise to technology it was mostly done by individuals. One man's lonely quest to invent and introduce a new way of doing something led to the creation of new technology, it was not magical at first as it was the focused intelligence/knowledge of a single individual. These creations could easily be understood by anyone that studied the technology that was being introduced. The key change in modern times revolves around the fact that new technology represents the creations of a collective intelligence greater than a single man. These "higher beings" (corporations) can assemble products that literally defy the perceptions of the average person, and in doing so label their creations as works of magic. No single person would be able to reproduce the fruits which they bare

Pushing this paradigm to its extreme, technology will soon will be created by non-human entities, Artificial intelligences. When this paradigm shift occurs the modern magicians will shift from human, to Ai workers. For lack of a better word, this is when the real magic happens. ;-)
