Ellul's work offers an extremely detailed criticism of the modern world we find ourselves thrown into. He points out the unseen monstrosity that has been built up all around us. This is something that we all take for granted. Our self reflective consciousness is lost as we live in a world that demands reflexive action, and offers up instant gratification. Even the so-called intellectuals fall prey to the technique of propaganda as they end up perpetuating a system that they are not fully aware of. The grand design is picked apart bit by bit in Ellul's books. It should be understood that very high level technocrats such as Zbigniew Brzezinski and Aldous Huxley have referenced and praised his work. It is chillingly accurate. A must read for anyone who has the fortitude to handle "the truth."
Technique itself is a powerful force. Something which cannot simply be "stopped." This makes many people think that merely criticizing technological "progress" is useless. Because of technique, we have all become accustomed to methodical behavior, and we demand absolute answers. The full grown oak tree is grown from a single acorn. Complexity unfolds according to design.
We now find ourselves living at a time in which technique dictates the way we live our lives. It is a true dictator, although it has no singular human identity. It culminates and expresses itself as a collective. A hive mind. This is something that we are all a part of, so it behooves us to ask: what is it?
