Interplanetary Rainbow Communities

An Inside Analysis of Rainbow Gathering Community Models

I had the pleasure to go to a Rainbow Gathering this past weekend. It was an opportunity that helped me personally understand how current events require solutions that support sustainable living. Up until now, I, along with most of you have lived a relatively convenient life.  By this I mean that we have had a vast majority of resources at our immediate disposal. The Rainbow Gathering promotes creating and sustaining independently developing resources that can be shared with the community.  These, along with other practices, might be the basis for the creation of new forms of societies that wish to grow and develop independently from an already established community and/or planetary culture.

Who is welcomed?
All conscious beings, of all species, in the multiverse.

Rainbow Gatherings are temporary intentional communities, typically held in outdoor settings, and espousing and practicing ideals of peace, love, harmony, freedom and community, as a consciously expressed alternative to mainstream popular culture, consumerism, capitalism and mass media.

The largest Rainbow Gatherings pose significant logistical challenges, providing up to 30,000 people with food, water, sanitation, medical care, and order in remote settings.

"Rainbow Gatherings, as a matter of principle, are free and non-commercial."  Using money to buy or sell anything at Rainbow Gatherings is taboo. There are no paid organizers, although there are volunteers ("focalizers") who are crucial to setting up the gathering site. Participants are expected to contribute money, labor, and/or material. All labor is voluntary and never formally compensated.

The primary principle is that necessities should be freely shared, while luxuries can be traded.

There are no official leaders, no formal structure, no official spokespersons, and no membership. Some rainbow family participants make the claim that the family is the "largest non-organization of non-members in the world". In addition to referring to itself as a non-organization, the Rainbow Family of Living Light's "non-members" also playfully call the movement a "disorganization".

Gatherings are loosely maintained by open, free form councils consisting of any "non-member" who wishes to be part of a council, [4] which use consensus process for making decisions.

Open source hardware

One key skill a community that seeks to detach itself from the collective core will need is the ability to create and manufacture it’s own hardware.

Social Manufacturing Network

Manufacturables: Peer-to-peer Open Manufacturing

  • P2P Database for Distributed Part Tracking
  • Available Parts, pattern matched across Open Hardware Design Databases
  • Web User Interface
    • Personal Parts Inventory
    • Hardware Design Database
      • Comments and Ratings
      • Wiki-editable
      • Categorized by Tags
    • Discovering Potential Manufacturables
      • By Locality / Region
      • By Social Network
      • By “Intent” to Build or Derive Usefulness from Something Manufacturable

    • P2P Social Housing

  • Designs and specifications for spontaneously buildable dwellings and living situations
  • Favors building materials that do not need cut or drilled - modular, like Legos
  • A Social Protocol
    • For trading and borrowing items
    • For collaboratively building projects
    • For forming spontaneous communities
  • Facilitates mass migration and evacuation, preserving our society’s current state of technological development

Decentralized Spontaneous Internets

While connection to the “community core web” is not guaranteed, communities will need to be able to create a network within the community to help facilitate the distribution of information resources, including:

  • Maps
  • Weather and Geological Events
  • News
  • Scientific Discoveries and Engineering Innovations
  • Entertainment
  • Educational Materials
  • Personal Messages (Cryptographically Private from End-to-End, but spread openly)

Alternative economic system: The Random Pocket Trade

A game where you stop a random person and ask them to play. You basically reach into your pocket and pull something random out, without knowing what they're going to give you. Pretty fun!
