Who Already Has Strong AI?

While some computer scientists believe that Strong AI, aka AGI (Automatic General Intelligence) has yet to be invented, I think it is quite possible that certain organizations already have and utilize various superintelligent systems - and that it is to their benefit that it remain hidden from Earth’s citizens (especially naive computer scientists).

According to OpenCog’s Vision,

“It is now 2010, and technology has advanced a long way since Good’s time.  The notion of an Intelligence Explosion has become almost commonsensical in some circles, with pragmatic visionaries like Ray Kurzweil and Intel CTO Justin Rattner arguing that AIs with general intelligence beyond the human level can be expected by the 2040s.”

But given that DARPA, being the creator of the modern Internet, has had a decades-long headstart and massive funding for their projects, which undoubtably would include both “narrow” and “strong” Artificial Intelligence, how can anyone claim that humanity has yet to actually build a superintelligent machine?

“Why Do You Think this Can Work When Other Attempts to Create Powerful AGI Have Failed?”  (OpenCog.org FAQ)

Well, perhaps there actually have been some successful attempts - that we do not YET know about.

Q: Do you think it's possible to create "thinking machines"...like sentience...self awareness?

I dont know if we can create sentience, but i know that humans can create “apparent sentience” and consistently pass the Turing Test and design systems that can manage human life better than humans can.

Q: When will all people have personal access to Strong AI technologies?

I think its important that we develop open source AI, for free, self-empowering usage by people everywhere - not only by corporations and governments and intelligence agencies and militaries.

Q: What do you estimate are the abilities of the technology being tested “behind the scenes”?

Militaries have had a large headstart on developing AI.  DARPA apparently was the first organization to develop and utilize what we now know as “The Internet”. Google is co-opted by several multinational intelligence agencies - so whether they have developed AI by themselves, or are using military tech, I think they must certainly “have” it too.  Google has data-centers around the world. But its not just Google - but also practically all 'Silicon Valley' technology companies, including Facebook and Twitter.
