To be able to unlock the power of algae bio-fuels, we first must address the current shortage of nitrate and phosphorus used for fertilizer in the world. Current world supplies are running out, and expected to disappear by 2030. They are the main ingredients in fertilizer used for plant growth for our food supply. To be able to feed a large industry like bio-fuels without completely depleting our natural supply or decreasing food supplies there are some precautions that can be made. This report focuses on 2 ways that a potential algae farm can acquire enough fertilizer from multiple sources to satisfy demand.
Algae Bio-Fuel production is important not only because of its ability to release the need for oil and other natural resources, but also helps fight the Greenhouse Gas Effect. The future looks to have multiple sources of bio-fuels including corn, sugar, hydrogen and algae to name a few.
Brazilian Ethanol Production Model

Brazil has been researching Sugar Bio-Fuel since the 1970’s, and are currently capable of distributing 7,054 Million Gallons per year. They are the current world leader in ethanol exporting, and number two in ethanol production. Three types of production facilities exist in Brazil:
· Sugar mills (producing only sugar) - The sugarcane is washed, chopped, shredded and crushed between rollers. The juice (grapa) contains 10 - 15% sucrose. The remaining material (by-product) is called bagasse.
· Mills with distillery plants (sugar and ethanol production), and
· Independent distilleries (only ethanol production).
The United States and Brazil represent nearly 90% of ethanol production in the world. Since sugarcane is replanted only once every six years and harvested with hand labor, it requires less energy for production than corn. According to Brazilian sources, sugarcane planted acreage (all uses) is expected to increase to over 25 million acres by 2012/13. The number of sugar ethanol plants are expected to increase from 325 (2006/07) to 410 (2012/13). Ethanol production is expected to reach ten billion gallons. This compares to the current production of 7 billion gallons (Table 1).




Global Issues At Hand

Expanding biofuel production is also projected to have an effect on livestock prices. A study done in China predicted that increased maize prices, due to biofuel expansion, will indirectly cause the prices of livestock production to increase due to the heavy reliance on maize for animal feed.[52] The increase in input prices would also lead to a decrease in livestock production and ultimately decrease in the income of livestock producers, affecting families globally.
There is much to be researched on how a successful algae bio-fuel program will affect the global economy both financially and also in jobs. One option is to privatize the organic waste renewal process. Transanimalists could use bio-engineered animals to assist in speeding up the decay process.
1 – Location, Location, Location
Algae farms can be placed in natural runoff areas from national farming communities. The Gulf of Mexico, The Great Lakes, and The Chesapeake Bay are 3 front-running suggestion locales. The runoff of fertilizer into each of the 3 areas allows a natural agitation of the potential farm, that naturally carries trace elements of nitrate and phosphorus to aid algae growth. This alone is not enough to fully fuel the algae farm, but help decrease the amount of external fertilizer required.
We are talking about a multi billion-trillion dollar industry mostly invested in water, and a lot of nations out to lose everything if the US can break it’s dependency to oil. This would include China, Iran, North Korea, Russia, and even Great Britain. For some of the countries on the list, oil Is a necessity for their financial security, desperate times we all know call for drastic measures. The problem is defending against all the potential leaks to prevent the algae and fertilizers to escape, but also how to keep enemy agents out via submarine, airplane, or boat. In the process attempting to prevent countries from trying to steal a strain of the newly bio-engineered algae, or dropping in a cleansing agent, travel through the algae farm will need to be restricted and federally organized.
Gulf zones and inlets are preferred coastal locations which would make shipping easier. However because of strict travel restrictions, placement locations could also include lakes and marshland areas. The first step to creating the algae farm is to cleanse the waters. Life within the water must be converted to fertilizer, certain shock treatments would damage algae growth, but oil spills could potentially be converted into “Dead Zones” perfect environments for building algae farms. The organic waste needed to start a large-scale algae farm, provide fertilizer used for the initial large growth spurt. The idea being that introducing small amounts of algae in dead-zones (unable to support most life, but full of fertilizer) will then cause a massive boom that can then be sustained with additional fertilizer.

2 – Regenerating through Compost

The focus of this study is into the bio-engineering of animals to increase the rate that Heterogenous mixtures of decomposing organic waste are converted to Organic Humus . By creating Organic Waste Compost we can further recycle our supply. According to Wikipedia, “In soil science, humus refers to any organic matter that has reached a point of stability, where it will break down no further and might, if conditions do not change, remain essentially as it is for centuries, if not millennia.[1]
Compost Management is necessary due to the fact that organic waste can produce toxic gases if not taken care of. One option is bio-engineered worms. Some species of worm grow up to 12 feet long, or can regenerate 2nd heads. Worms work as biological pistons, forcing air through the pile, and assisting in breaking down waste in to matter directly.






3 Eco-Physical Categories of worms would need to be created.
· Epigeic
Surface dwelling, 3 to 6 feet
· Endogeic
Subsurface dwelling, 5 to 8 feet
· Anecic
Deep dwellers that tunnel and drag nutrients down to the bottom, 10 to 12 feet

Here is a list of possible bio-engineered features

· Size Control
Microchaetus Rappi, Mega Scolides Australis
· Climate Temperature Control
· Regeneration of Head and Sexual Organs
In case of damage to worm stock, or harvesting to feed to livestock
· Underwater Life
· Increased Humus Production


3 – Farm Management

One advantage of many biofuels over most other fuel types is that they are biodegradable, and so relatively harmless to the environment if spilled.[36][37][38] Algae fuel still has its difficulties though, for instance to produce algae fuels it must be mixed uniformly, which, if done by agitation, could affect biomass growth.[39] The United States Department of Energy estimates that if algae fuel replaced all the petroleum fuel in the United States, it would require only 15,000 square miles (38,849 square kilometers), which is roughly the size of Maryland,[35] or less than one seventh the amount of land devoted to corn in 2000.[40]
Ethanol from living algae
Most biofuel production comes from harvesting organic matter and then converting it to fuel but an alternative approach relies on the fact that some algae naturally produce ethanol and this can be collected without killing the algae. The ethanol evaporates and then can be condensed and collected.
